"Lupillo Rivera Desnudo Fotos 4" If you asked one hundred people, "What is a gallery?" you would get one hundred different answers. And if those people were to be asked, "What is a gallery?" again, those responses might be impossible to agree upon. The word has been coined and re-coined and re-coined and co-opted in such a vast array of ways that it's nearly impossible to generalize about what it means. A gallery is a place where art is shown and sold, and certainly several of the examples presented here fulfill that particular criterion. A gallery is also a place where art is bought and sold, and again the offerings represented on these pages would suffice. These galleries can be seen as spaces within which to display art; they are places to present works that formerly were on the walls of someone's home or on an artist's studio wall or in private collections. And, galleries are places where artists are shown, without the interruption of museum curators. But just as artworks are shown, so too are artists. And the studios of artists are also spaces within which to display works. Behind the walls is sometimes more than what meets the eye. These photographs, taken by Lupillo Rivera, offer a glimpse behind the scenes of various artist's work spaces. Some viewers may see these photographs as an invitation to stroll through Rivera's private gallery. Others may view them as something akin to flipping through a portfolio of work created at an artist's home studio, gallery or even during an intimate session with said artist in his or her own bedroom or living room. The photographs show both sides of the whole experience: the art on view and the art itself with which to absorb it. These images include portraits and still lifes. Some images include sculptures and paintings, and others include sketches and models. Yet there is a common thread in the eye of the beholder: these images show works in progress. This implicit invitation to walk through these private spaces—whether they are at the studio, in someone's living room or bedroom, or just in a barrio—is precisely what makes these photographs valuable as pieces of art. Many galleries present art that already exists; here we see art that is just emerging from its maker's mind or hand or studio walls into existence. We see artists sharing their creative process, and we see the resulting product. Each image demonstrates Rivera's exceptional eye for detail and demonstrates his ability to turn memorable moments into interesting artworks. Each image looks like a still life, but if you look closely you will notice the wink of a knife at the edge of the table or that one work is resting on pedestals in an outstretched studio armchair. Or our gaze might be led beyond the picture plane to another object, such as an artist's drawing pad propped up against a wall or a book lying on its side in front of a desk. We see knitted sweaters and bookshelves hung with cotton cloths.
